Riparian areas are the lands bordering on streams, lakes and wetlands. The health of these areas directly impacts fish habitat. Healthy riparian systems act as buffers for extreme weather changes, flooding and pollution.
The Riparian Areas Regulation is provincial legislation that requires local governments to enact bylaws that protect riparian areas during development. As a Qualified Environmental Professional, we assess a property with a development proposed within 30 metres of a watercourse, for the applicability of the Riparian Areas Regulation. The assessment we perform will determine the width of the Streamside Protection Enhancement Area (SPEA) on a property. Development within the SPEA is restricted and additional measures may be recommended to enhance or maintain the riparian area.
